The film won positive reviews in screenings and was well received by critics, prompting it to be selected to be shown in the non-competitive category at the 2002 Shangai international film festival Despite being censored in 2001, the film only had a theatrical release across India in November 2003 under the title Nadhi Karayinile, after the distributor Viswas Sundar did not want the film to be classified as a "Muslim film". It went on to win three State Film Awards including the recognition as Best film portraying women in good lightThe Hindu described Ponvannan's direction as an "absorbing presentation"

Mohamath Khan is egoistical and short tempered and will do what he considers right without realizing the consequences of his action. After fixing the second daughter's marriage, Mohamath Khan needs some money for the marriage expenses and goes to his elder daughter's husband Nazeer for help. When Nazeer regretfully refuses, Khan takes away his daughter Jameela and her baby in a rage. Thus the two men have an ego clash for which Jameela is made to suffer. Though Jameela longs to be with her husband, she does not disobey her father. After forcing Nazeer to divorce her, Khan plans to get Jameela remarried to a beedi merchant from his own village. On discovering this, Jameela rebels. Shocked, Mohamath takes to his bed. He now wants to make amends but, there is no easy solution. According to Islamic law, after divorce Jameela has to get married to another man, obtain a divorce, and only then can she remarry her first husband. She does not intend to submit to this sort of misery and prefers death.
